Alumni Artist Insights

About the Alumni Artist Insights Series

Alumni Artist Insights is a series of performances and artist talks that showcases performing alumni and their stories. The interactive format shares the artist’s journey with audiences and brings a unique perspective to the music and performance.

About the Performers

Brian Calhoon (B.M. '07 percussion) combines his experience as a percussionist and vocalist to perform a unique collection of music for marimba and his voice. A Bay Area native, Brian shares his path from orchestral percussionist to singing cabaret artist. Hear stories from his move to Boston and building a career in arts administration, coming out of the "musical closet" and creating the Marimba Cabaret. This dynamic program pairs contemporary art songs written for Brian alongside his adaptations of musical theatre and popular music for marimba, vibraphone and his voice. Brian will be joined by fellow SFCM alumnus and faculty member, Stan Muncy.

Stan Muncy (M.M. '06 percussion) is a regular extra with the San Francisco Symphony, a member of the Santa Rosa Symphony, and was acting percussionist/assistant timpanist with the Honolulu Symphony. His recording credits extend to the NAXOS classical label and many film and video game scores recorded at Warner Brothers Studios, Capitol Records, and Skywalker Sound. He also enjoys a prolific new music career performing with SF Contemporary Music Players, and having toured with four-time Grammy-winning new music sextet eighth blackbird. He is currently on faculty at CSU, Stanislaus and SFCM.
